Composer, Performer, and Author. Niles was born in Louisville in 1892. Coming from a musical family, Niles began to play the dulcimer at an early age. As a teenager he worked with a surveying team in eastern Kentucky. During this time he kept a notebook in which he recorded lyrics and music of old folk songs known in the area. This section of New York State was originally known as the Massachusetts Purchase under the ownership of Robert Morris who in 1801 conveyed it to the State of Connecticut (Connecticut Tract) and to Sir William Pulteney (Pulteney Tract). Upon the death of Pulteney's daughter, Henrietta, in 1808, it came into the possession of her cousin Sir John Lowther Johnstone of England.
